First Impression of Hida Takayama

Hida Takayama

On our first out of town trip as a married couple, my husband and I went to Hida Takayama in the Chūbu region. Can I just say – travelling with him can be a challenge, really. Right before starting the tour with my husband, I scrambled to get the sightseeing guide out of my bag. He stopped me and proposed to just walk around and see what comes our way. I was hesitant, but conceded.

This was the first time someone stopped me from using a guide or map; if it’s available, I usually use it to make sure I hit up all the “must-see places.”

So, what happened when we ditched the guide map? Peace! We were able to sightsee without worrying about having to see everything! We walked around and took everything in. Our noses weren’t buried in the guide, so we can actually see and fully concentrate on what Hida Takayama had to offer. There was no stress on whether we were missing anything or not, and that helped me appreciate the city more. So, I guess I should be thanking my husband.

First Impression

Hida Takayama offered more than I expected. It is an awesome and peaceful place for people who want to get away from the normally stressful urban life in Tokyo.  The locals are friendlier, more hospitable and, surprisingly, speak English well. We were pleasantly surprised to hear restaurant staff, clerks, and even bus drivers speak good English.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is something mysterious and special about Hida Takayama, and I’m willing to return there just so I can figure it out and put it into words.
