Hostel Review: K’s House in Hida Takayama

K's House Hostel
Dubbed as quality hostel with modern Japanese style amenities, K’s House Hida Takayama is a relatively new hostel opened on September 28, 2012 conveniently located in the heart of Hida Takayama just 3-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. K’s House was the second hostel when we stayed in as a couple in Hida Takayama (the first hostel was full the next day). We booked their standard Double Ensuite Room which was 4,100 yen per person per night. The reservation process also went smoothly as I received the booking confirmation within the day.

It wasn’t far from JR Takayama Station and Bus Terminal, a 3 to 4-minute walk and it was very easy to find. As soon as we found the hostel, we were greeted by the receptionist and assisted us with check-in procedure.

Lobby and Check-in

Surprisingly, their Japanese style lobby and reception desk were very nice. It seemed better than the previous hostel we stayed at. You can also use their computers and WiFi for free at the lobby.

Maps, guides, and other cute stuff for travelers were also in display. There’s a World Map with pins to point where you from. Interestingly, my husband perused the map and noticed that no pins were pointed to Maine, U.S.A.

He gladly put a pin on the map to his hometown and turned out he’s the first person from Maine to visit K’s House or possibly Hida Takayama.

We went back to the reception desk. The staff were amazed when they found out that we live in Japan and pleased that we chose Hida Takayama as our destination.

After the check-in procedure, we were then escorted to the hostel’s amenities. I was very impressed on how the dining area and the kitchen were neatly organized. I felt like we’re not even in a hostel, but in a 2 or even 3-star hotel.

The Room

First of all, wow. The entire room was indeed very clean and smelled clean too. There was a TV but we didn’t use because it’ll be all in Japanese. It was a well-insulated room in the winter time. So warm that we had to turn the air conditioning on at night. The bed was very comfortable.

The only thing we didn’t like are the pillows. It wasn’t meant for sleeping but rather placed under the primary pillow for support. They were small and thin. Either way, I slept comfortably that night due to fatigue.

The bathroom was very clean too. The entire bathroom actually looked like the ones in the airplane only with a bathtub. I had no problems with that. But my 6-foot tall husband thought it was too small for him.

Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash were also available.

They’re not kidding when they say quality. The receptionist and other staff were all so nice and accommodating. The entire hostel building was clean and quiet.

They also knew which good restaurants to go and how to get to major attractions. I would probably rate my overall experience as 4 out of 5. Maybe if they will fix the pillow, it’ll be 5 out of 5. But I would most certainly stay here again.

Original date of stay: February 15-16, 2015.
